Behind the Scenes at HighJinx

This behind-the-scenes photo was taken by David Peralty at HighJinx on Sommerset Street in Ottawa as we got ready to shoot a one of the scenes for Episode Two. You can see just how many people can be involved in a shoot of this size, and the some of the gear involved.

Big scene

From left to right, you can see:

Sound Recordist Mark Bell, who is handling headphones attached to the microphone boom,
Actor Orrin C. Kerr (plays George),
Camera & Lighting Assistant Geoff Lachapelle,
Actor Emanuelle Carriere (plays Jenna),
Director W Thomas Leroux (with the long hair), looking at a (hidden) camera monitor,
Sound Recordist Howard Sonnenburg,
Director of Photography Mike Geiger who is conferring with the director,
Grip Alex Martin who is holding up a silk diffuser (used to soften hard light).

For visible gear, there is the Kino Flow Diva light on a stand, a (I believe) Canon 5D Mk 2 with a EF 70-200mm lens, mounted on a tripod with rails and follow-focus, plus another light behind the silk diffuser that Alex is holding up.

We were shooting Orrin’s close-up of his side of a conversation that he and Emanuelle have near the end of Episode Two, which took two takes before we moved on to the next shot.

The first thing we shot that day was actually the final scene of Episode Two, which took place in HighJinx’s basement, and Mike Thompson recorded a behind-the-scenes video, showing again how cramped it can be for crew, and Sue Murphy talked about one of the handy tools we were using called Movie Slate.

The final shot at this location was the exterior of Emanuelle walking up to HighJinx, which we got in a matter of a few minutes, before packing everything back up and moving on to our next location for a lunch break, then setting up for a scene in Episode Four.

In total, we spent about three and a half hours at HighJinx.

Thank-you for letting us shoot there, Karen and Leigh! We really appreciated it!
